Bybit has offered a reward to help recover the recently stolen 1.46 billion dollars in cryptocurrency. The platform will pay five percent of the recovered amount.
Bybit hopes to use the reward to mobilize the community to help find the cryptocurrency. If someone sees a blockchain transaction and reports it that can be traced back to the theft from the Bybit wallet, they will receive five percent of the cryptocurrency upon its recovery. The service used to recover the money will also receive a share of five percent.
A total of 401,347 ether was stolen in the attack, which at the time was worth 1.46 billion dollars. The value of Ethereum has since dropped, meaning the stolen currency is now worth around 950 million dollars. This also means the total amount to be received is lower: 140 million dollars in rewards has been made available. According to the website, twelve people have already been successful in tracing the stolen currency. They have been awarded a total of 4.2 million dollars.
The FBI stated earlier today that North Korea is responsible for the theft. Ben Zhou, CEO and co-founder of Bybit, said when announcing the reward that it is the Lazarus Group, which is linked to the North Korean government. The bounty is therefore called the Lazarusbounty and Zhou says the company will not stop until ‘Lazarus or other criminals have been eliminated’. “In the future, we will also open up the website to other victims of Lazarus.”
